Social media and the internet have evolved exponentially within the last ten years. The original platform of social media was at first quite limited, involving only a few key websites like Myspace, which was used for entertainment purposes by teens and the computer-literate youth. Current day applications of social media however, are being used globally by thousands of people of all ages for a wide variety of reasons. Modern day businesses use Facebook to connect with their clients and customers, celebrities reveal details about their lives via tweets on Twitter, and regular everyday people rise to fame through viral videos on YouTube. With so much change and innovation occurring in the social media world of today, it raises the question, where is social media headed in the future?
Several changes have been predicted to occur in the next couple years, with 2015 bringing in a new angle to the way the world will view and use social media. Many individuals, who originally opted out of social media for privacy reasons, may now have a reason to jump in. Internet apps such as Snapchat and Yik Yak are promoting the use of private browsing, and are delivering anonymous social content services to users online. Other recent anonymizing services such as Tor are beginning to address the issue of internet privacy, which has surfaced largely as a result of users becoming aware and concerned about how their personal information is being obtained and disbursed to third parties on the internet.
Additionally, market trends show that social media will become more immersive and interactive in 2015. With the release of smart devices such as the Smartwatch by Apple, and the highly futuristic Google Glass explorer, social media will become more integrated into daily life and activities. Feeds from social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus will become transmitted to gadgets that can be worn on the body and carried with you, maximizing the ability to maintain constant access to social media and online trends for users at all times. With the popularity for smart technology and internet applications constantly on the rise, e-commerce has also started to gain influence on the web and will likely have a strong impact on social media in 2015.
Facebook and Twitter have begun beta-testing “buy buttons,” which would appear beside online content and allow users to make purchases in just a few steps while continuing their online browsing. This is said to increase business interactions with clients and improve the way businesses market their products and services online. Furthermore, a discrete payment feature may be activated through Facebook’s Messaging app that would allow users to complete money transfers free of charge using only debit card information. The network has already released a new Auto-fill feature that permits users to save their online payment and credit card information for future transactions, following in the footsteps of mobile payment moguls like Apple Pay App and PayPal. While it is not always possible to predict what social trends or services will last over time, the current success and popularity of social media websites show that they will certainly continue to persevere in the future.
