- Back-up your server prior to troubleshooting. Make sure there are no issues with your back-up and that you have a complete back-up of your system (ex: Windows Server R2 2008, 2012, Unix).
- Check your hard drive for any issues. If you have a RAID configuration, make sure no drives are degraded.
- Scan your server for viruses. You should have server anti-virus removal software that you regularly scan your server with. It’s a good idea to check for a virus before other problems because a virus may be causing consequent problems on your server.
- Check your motherboard alerts. With HP, Dell, or any other brand, the manufacturer of the server should have a tool to allow you to check for alerts for hardware problems. Dell open manage will alert you with any motherboard problems.
- Check event viewer blogs, located under administrative tools under control panel. Here you can see most errors.
- Make a list of problems that you have found from previous steps and assess whether you will be able to fix them or if you require professional support.
- Make a list of possible resolutions; usually if you are unfamiliar with the problem researching online is a good idea as other people may have had the problem.
- When trying possible resolutions, make sure you keep exact changes you make on the operating system. If you get a professional to fix your server they will need to know what has or has not been done to it.
- If your problem is related to hardware, there are several diagnostic tools that you can get from the manufacturer of the server. These will help you identify the problem.
- It is recommended if you have problems on any of this software you contact a professional: Terminal Server (remote desktop), Microsoft Exchange Server, MSSQL Server, MySQL, Internet Information Services (IIS), Windows Back-up, & Back-up Exec.
