Why Does Your Business Need a Content Management System?

June 18, 2014General, SEO, Web Design, Website developmentMOTIONBORG

Gone are the days where you have to call your website’s developer for every little change to your site. We are in a new era of companies having the tools to log on and edit their own websites. We are in the era of content management systems (CMS).

A content management system allows you to run your website and keep it updated all without needing technical knowledge. You don’t need to have any programming or developing background to use a CMS and the respectable ones (like WordPress) are so easy to use you’ll wonder why you ever went so long without it.

Content is the most important part of a website and that means you need to keep your website updated all the time. You need to be posting new content daily to increase traffic and improve SEO, but how do you do that without giving all of your money to a developer? A content management system.

There are many advantages to having a CMS and really no disadvantages. Publishing and editing content is fast and efficient, which saves your company money and time. Having a CMS can improve your search engine ranking by regularly updating content and allowing external contribution, such as comments and likes. CMS can help you learn user behavior so you can makes changes and track their effects.

The best CMS right now is WordPress which offers about 30,000 plugins and has been downloaded over 60 million times since its start in 2003. Here are some of the best WordPress plugins…

  • All in One SEO Pack: This is a necessary plugin. It gives your page an SEO-friendly title, homepage description, and keywords. This plugin has been downloaded over 18 million times.
  • Broken Link Checker: This scans your site and tells you if any broken links or missing images are found and lets you replace broken links with functional ones.
  • Dagon Design Site Map Generator: This generates a customizable sitemap so that you can create a highly searchable site for people and search engines.
  • Google XML Sitemaps for Videos: This generates a sitemap for your YouTube videos in order to allow search engines to recognize and index them, allowing them to be searchable. It has been downloaded 13 million times.
  • Redirection: This plugin allows you to redirect links, “page not found” errors, and links from an old website.
  • SEO Friendly Images: This updates your uploaded images with proper attributes in order to provide an image description for search engines.
  • SEO Smart Links: This automatically links keywords and phrases in your posts and comments with corresponding posts and tags on your site.
  • Askimet: This plugin has been downloaded over 21 million times. The reason so many people have downloaded it is because it checks comments and trackbacks to determine if they are spam. If they seem like spam they are automatically moved to your WordPress installation’s spam folder. This is a must-have for blogs.
  • Disqus: This allows for more interactive “web talk.” It integrates with WordPress’s native comment system to feature threaded comments and replies and allows you to reject or approve comments via email.
  • Contact Form 7: This plugin has been downloaded 17 million times, which is a lot considering the multitude of contact form plugins on WordPress. Like its description says it’s “just another contact form,” but it works.
• JetPack: This is an official WordPress.com plugin that has 10 million downloads. It gives your self-hosted blog extra features such as visitor stats, social media sharing options, grammar and spell checker, and much more.
  • WordPress Database Backup: This backs up all of your files to your server, desktop or inbox once you decide the frequency.
  • Snapshot: Another backup plugin, this is like Apple’s Time Machine and allows you to back up and restore easily.
  • Google Analytics: This free plugin provides detailed graphs, charts and traffic numbers. It is the preferred analytics plugin of many webmasters.

There are thousands of plugins for whatever type of website you may have. A content management system is necessary in this day in age, so why go without it? Begin by designing or redesigning your site with WordPress and then updating your site regularly and enhancing your site with any of 30,000 plugins.
